Navigate Care for Aging Parents
They are worried about his mother!
A professional couple in their mid-forties, are facing a reckoning with his mother, She’s in her early 70’s and a widow and still in decent health. But they know, from his father’s experience, that she probably won’t be able to take care of herself in the near future. The couple have three of their own children so having his mother move in with them would be a real burden and she doesn’t have enough money to care for herself when the time comes.
He has a sister but she’s not likely to be of any help caring for her. The couple will end up covering her cost of care whether that’s home care, assisted living or nursing home care.
We met recently to see if a long-term care policy makes sense for their predicament. They wanted to know how it will work.
The couple would own and pay for the policy and receive the payout from the insurance company or have the payment go directly to the professional caregiver. This allows them to manage her care but not actually having to bath her, dress her or provide any of the other basic activities of daily living,
They agree that this makes sense for them.
Now the real test comes. Will his mother agree to be the insurance!
