A Personal Journey into Long-Term Care Planning
The Source of My Obsession: A Personal Journey into Long-Term Care Planning
My mother, Evelyn, passed away at the age of 74. She had been a lifelong smoker, a habit she probably should have avoided, especially considering her family history—her grandmother also died from lung cancer. But Evelyn’s legacy was not just about health struggles; it included something else, something far more tangible yet heartbreaking.
Her grandmother, Nana Tilch, had left behind several hundred thousand dollars—money she carefully saved and protected, much like a squirrel hoards acorns for winter. Despite financial ups and downs over the years, my mother was determined never to touch that money. It was her plan to pass it on to her children, myself included, as a lasting gift.
Unfortunately, life had other plans. Evelyn spent more than three years receiving care—first at home, then finally in a nursing home. It was there that the savings slowly disappeared. The money meant to provide security for us was instead consumed by the high costs of long-term care.
In her final days, when she was clear-headed and free from the haze of medication, she understood what was happening. She apologized to us and to Nana Tilch for not being able to preserve the inheritance. That moment left a deep impression on me.
At that time, I already had a successful career as a life insurance agent. Yet, to my shame, I had no real understanding of how the cost of long-term care could devastate a family’s finances. Curious and concerned, I began asking around and soon realized that most people were only vaguely aware of how poor planning for aging could lead to financial ruin.
This “black hole” of long-term care expenses hit me like a ton of bricks. It changed everything—for me personally and professionally. Since then, I have become obsessed with learning everything I can about long-term care insurance and advocating for its importance. It is a critical tool for anyone with enough assets to require an estate plan and who wants to protect their legacy.
Now, whenever I speak with clients or friends, I ask a simple but crucial question: “What is your plan for aging?”
Because without a plan, the costs of care can quickly consume everything you’ve worked so hard to build. Planning ahead with long-term care insurance isn’t just about protecting assets—it’s about peace of mind and preserving your family’s future.
If my mother’s story teaches us anything, it’s that preparation matters. Don’t wait until it’s too late—take control of your future today.
